The Ontario Ministry of Education's MISA initiative places emphasis on the use of data to support evidence-informed decision-making in classrooms, schools and districts. The goal of the initiative is to increase capacity in the use of data to support improved student achievement.
MISA Northeast PNC is the Managing Information for Student Achievement (MISA) Professional Network Centre (PNC) of the school authorities and school boards of Northeastern Ontario.
The Northeastern MISA PNC, as part of its annual plan, often provides opportunities for teachers to share their learning amassed through collaborative inquiry projects, action research etc. The Northeastern PNC has used a variety of formats including research carousels and conferences. Decisions regarding the implementation of research-sharing take place on an annual basis. Due to the focus on professional learning with research experts built into the 2012-2013 plan, the PNC will not be hosting a carousel or conference this year, but will consider the possibility for 2013-14.
The Northeastern MISA PNC was host to over 125 educators at their regional conference on April 12. Building on the current Ministry focus of assessment for, of, and as learning, the conference focus was on identifying and using assessment strategies that have a positive impact on Ontario students.
The conference opened with a welcoming performance by an Aboriginal Drumming group accompanied by a Choir, both consisting of local elementary students from Mother St. Bride School. The performers, led by Mrs. Allison Denomme and Mme Sacha Stevens, accompanied by Mr. Denomme were a truly amazing example of how time and opportunity lead to extraordinary things.
